Microgaming Online Casinos - The Justice Dept and Online Casinos
Why is it that online casinos get such a bad rap in the U.S.? It really isn’t fair. They are legalized businesses all over the world, and yet the U.S. government views their operations as criminal. Well, to be specific, the Justice Department views their operations in the United States as illegal, and by Americans anywhere as illegal. But they don’t really do too much about it all, and so the question lingers: why does the United States view online casinos as illegal, but not act against them? Why is America denied the financial benefits – such as taxes – simply because of an ongoing taboo in the country that tends to look upon gambling as immoral?
American views about gambling are only part of the story. There are certain regions of the U.S. where outright gambling is permitted – on Indian reservations, in Las Vegas, and in Atlantic City, for instance. But it isn’t just about the taboo. It’s about the regulations. Casinos from sea-to-shining-sea are taxed, regulated, investigated, held accountable, and for the most part, more than likely honest. They’ve been around for decades, usually, and if they haven’t then their financially-blessed financiers at least have been. Sure, there is a history with the mob rule of casinos, but the war on organized crime is of much less import at the moment than it used to be. As long as casinos are fair and pay their taxes, they can operate freely.
But online casinos are not based on U.S. territory and more than likely after a legalization by the U.S. government still would choose to be based offshore for tax reasons. This isn’t exactly a way to enamor U.S. authorities to the idea of letting online casinos operate on U.S. soil. These companies, based overseas, might also find a way to get around certain regulations, especially concerning advertising. In short, from the perspective of the U.S. government, online casinos can’t be trusted. Maybe if online casinos changed the way they are perceived by the U.S., they could have a chance at acceptance.
