Those of us who are football/soccer fans and who also happen to be fans of betting on teams like Real Madrid and players like David Beckham at online casinos need no longer worry: thanks to a French judge, an injunction against online casinos and bookmakers to stop the use of the Spanish football club and player’s names on their websites has been thrown out.

Lawyers for the team and five of its most high-profile players Ronaldo, Beckham, Raul, Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo had argued that several online casinos and bookmakers should pay a license fee to use the names of the team and stars or suspend betting on the club and its players on their online casinos websites. The club’s main argument against the online casinos and bookmakers was that rather than using the names to help online casinos bettors to place bets, the websites were using Real Madrid and the five “galaticos” for commercial purposes.

The online casinos and sportsbooks, however, argued that the only reason the team and the players were listed on online casinos was for factual representation in order to allow bettors the best and most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the club. The team is very protective of its notoriety and its player’s notoriety, and any attempt by outside entities such as online casinos to cash-in on the team without the team’s permission or partnership is seen as a major slight. The French judge, however, did not see the case that way and despite arguments from Jean-Luis Dupont, a lawyer who won a famous freedom-of-contract case and was representing Real Madrid, threw out the case against the online casinos and bookmakers because there wasn’t any evidence that the online casinos were using the Real Madrid and player’s names for anything other than reasons to help online bettors.
